"Delta Chapter is the best thing that ever happened to me."

About Delta

Delta Chapter holds a lofty distinction within Alpha Phi Omega: we are the oldest continually-active chapter. Alpha is currently inactive, and Beta and Gamma have both been inactive at times; Delta has been continually active at Auburn University since its founding. Seventy-six years of leadership, friendship, and service here on the plains.

Delta Chapter was founded on October 31st, 1927, by twelve Eagle Scout students at Auburn University. It was the fourth chapter of Alpha Phi Omega and the first one outside of Pennsylvania and New York. Our chapter was installed by Colonel Millard Wescott, the scout executive in Montgomery, who traveled by dirt road to the small town of Auburn to install Alpha Phi Omega at Auburn, then known as Alabama Polytecnic Institute.

In 1936 and in ensuing years, Delta Chapter sponsored intramural sporting events at Auburn and awarded trophies to the winners, and in 1938, a Delta brother assisted Albert Thomas in laying out the town of Guntersville while a dam was being built there. In 1939, Delta Brothers took the local scout troop to the World's Fair. During this time, the chapter also raised money to erect lights on the tennis courts and a scoreboard at then-Cliff Hare stadium.

In 1951, Delta Chapter established a non-profit consignment bookstore, the Book Exchange, which gave students a way to buy and sell books at a reasonable price. It has operated ever since. In 1960, however, Delta began it's biggest service project and the project that would define the organization for the next 40 years: caring for the War Eagles.

From 1960 through 2000, Delta Chapter cared for War Eagle IV, V, and VI, the last two in the A.E. Hamer Aviary (the Eagle's Cage) that Delta raised funds to erect. During this time, brothers were responsible for day-to-day care of the War Eagles, including feeding, handling, and traveling to games with them. This association changed in 2000, when the Southeastern Raptor Rehabilitiation Center assumed full control of the Eagle program at Auburn.

Delta chapter has installed other chapters at the University of Georgia (Beta Zeta), Mercer University (Delta Iota) and others in the Region. Most chapters in the southeast can be traced, eventually, to Delta.
